You have to watch this video for the sake of the kid who shows up around the 1:02 mark. He references Super Bowl history and his fantasy football team...and he's what, 10? See, a lot of times we like to think that as adults, we are so much smarter than children. Sure, we have schooling and experience, and they don't. But I look back to some of my thoughts and ideas as a kid...and I have to think, not bad. I knew my baseball stats much better then, because I used to study my baseball cards methodically. Ha, ok, thinking outside of sports, perhaps I had better morals and perspective then, too.
I would say after watching this video, don't be too quick to turn your back on your "young" self, to think that you must leave your past completely behind as you grow. On the other hand, don't let your birth age or current age define you. I'm struck by how many bloggers complain about their favorite sports team or ESPN or what not because "It's not like it was when it was growing up." That might be true, but it can also trap you into comparing everything to how it was at some idealized age. Or, you're so obsessed with being 22 and being in college, let's say, that you don't dare do anything that doesn't fit with what a 22-year-old would do. Stretch yourself outside of your age; I can't remember the last time I spent some time with little kids. And looking at this video, I'm missing out; they are funny and refreshing.
Wow, that was a lot of moralizing. Sorry.

AV Wednesday: Random Sports Crush Returns!
Time for another Random Sports Crush! You know the routine; it's not someone who poses for major magazines or is a cheerleader or sideline reporter or anything like that. It's more likely a female athlete, especially in a less well-known sport, or print reporter that is the target of my half-joking, half-serious affection. Today it's Erin Buescher of the WNBA San Antonio Silver Stars.
Thanks to the Sacramento Bee for the photo.
Erin Buescher got my attention one afternoon when I was watching TV and switched to the WNBA game. I had never heard of her before, but the announcer mentioned that she was having a career-high of 19 points in the game. That got my interest; I was an off-the-bench type for years in high school, and to hear that a bench player is having a career game always makes me feel good. Soon after, she got the ball on the break and was whacked in the eye as she went for a lay-up. Ouch! But what intrigued me was that even though she got hit, ending her best game in the WNBA, she was smiling and laughing. A lady who can laugh in the middle of adversity like that had to be cool (or crazy).
So I did some follow-up "research", and discovered she's a laid-back Californian who loves to surf, is always smiling (and a lovely smile it is, too)...and at the same time, a woman of high moral character who wants to serve others too. Neat combination! She transferred to a small Christian school her last year just because her religious convictions were more important than a potential WNBA career. Who really does that, putting sports second?! Impressive!
Then she worked her way up from years of not being very good in the WNBA (see my other Erin post) to become a decent player. She's currently the third-leading scorer for the surprisingly successful San Antonio Silver Stars (second place in the West as of today). In Erin's personal life, last I heard she was close to signing a long-term deal with a lucky man from the Greek basketball league.
So Erin, congrats on gaining the coveted (ok, more like feared) RSC title! Oh, and I did find some fan video as well from her time in Greece. Note the fire in the stands in the second movie around the 2-minute mark; those Euros know how to celebrate, heh.

AV Wednesday*: Nice Red Sox Fans Exist! + Punchout
Yes, I know, my title is an oxymoron already. But bear with me; after the deadspin posts on drunk Red Sox fans, their existence was rather uncertain. However, after a thorough scouring of the 'Tube, I have discovered the existence of one Red Sox fan that even Yankees and Mets fans might be able to tolerate:
Surprising, isn't it? Now guys, to keep our man cover intact, remember, you can't post and say that this is cute. Make sure to grumble or mutter at the absence of grown lady videos in the comment section. It'll be our little secret that you may have actually enjoyed that video.
EDIT: OK, this was too funny not to add: Mike Tyson's Punchout video acted out for the present day.
* For the record, I've decided to actually put some structure on this blog. As of this millisecond, the following plan is in motion:
Mondays are perspective posts (i.e. Jesus/Newton/Freud Plays Sports or Open Letters) and commenting on weekend sports events.
Wednesdays are Audio-Visual posts (pictures and videos of cool sports stuff and athletes, including, possibly, yours truly. I don't want to jinx it, so no details yet about my potential project, but I think you might enjoy it.)
Fridays are Bloggolalia and Open Bias posts (in which I discuss how the media (mainstream or blogs) has covered a sports story this week, and ask you for your opinion). I think this format will help emphasize what makes my blog interesting and unique. I do enjoy guest bloggers on occasion, so if you have any ideas, shoot me an e-mail and maybe you too can be read by thousands! err, dozens! err...my cousin Wilbur and Google searchers who can't spell well?
